IOC Presents Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award to Wrestling Coach Raul Trujillo Díaz and Volleyball Coach Lang Ping

Lausanne, Switzerland – On last Monday, Cuban wrestling coach Raul Trujillo Díaz was honored with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award during a ceremony at the Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The award was presented by IOC President Kirsty Coventry and Sergii Bubka, Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Entourage Commission.

Trujillo Díaz has been a key figure in Cuba’s rise as a leading nation in Greco-Roman wrestling, bringing over 52 years of coaching experience to the mat. He has coached both the Cuban and Portuguese national teams across five Olympic Games.

“I am deeply honored to receive this extraordinary recognition,” said Trujillo Díaz. “I would like to thank the IOC, all the athletes I have coached over the past 50 years, fellow wrestling coaches, and the many individuals who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the sport to which I have devoted my life. They have been my motivation and inspiration. I also extend my gratitude to United World Wrestling (UWW). And a heartfelt thank you to someone very special—my family—for their unwavering support.”

Among the legends he has trained is five-time Olympic champion Mijaín López, who at Paris 2024 became the first athlete in any sport to win five consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same event. Other notable athletes mentored by Trujillo Díaz include Rio 2016 champion Ismael Borrero and Tokyo 2020 60kg champion Luis Orta.

In addition to introducing innovative training methods that have propelled his nation to success, Trujillo Díaz has published numerous research papers and articles on wrestling science and pedagogy. He has also served widely as an educator for UWW across Latin America, sharing his deep knowledge and experience with new generations of athletes and coaches.

Also receiving the IOC Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award was Chinese volleyball coach Lang Ping.

“It is truly special to be here with all of you to celebrate our two coaches for their incredible commitment and their lifetime of work in serving their athletes—helping them become not only the best athletes they can be, but also the best humans,” said IOC President Kirsty Coventry during the ceremony. “So many of us who compete in sport understand that the lessons we learn in sport guide us throughout our lives. That is where the role of coaches is so essential,” she added.
